Finding an exact cross-brand paint match is notoriously difficult. A color that looks identical on a computer screen can clash terribly when painted on a real wall. At Hackrea, we eliminated the guesswork by building an industrial-grade color science engine that mirrors human visual perception.
Most online paint matchers use basic Hex or RGB codes to find similar colors. However, RGB only measures how a digital screen emits light—it cannot account for how physical paint pigment absorbs light in a real room. Two paints with similar RGB values can look entirely different once they dry. We bypass basic digital matching and convert all colors into the CIELAB color space, a 3D model designed to replicate exactly how the human eye perceives lightness, hue, and chroma.
To determine the closest equivalent, our algorithm calculates the physical 3D distance between two colors. In color science, this measurement is called a Delta E (Δ E) score. To make this data instantly actionable for your interior design projects, our tool automatically translates this technical distance into a straightforward Similarity Score percentage:

How the math works: Our engine maps the color distance on a strict linear scale where a perfect physical match (Δ E = 0) equals 100%, and our maximum allowable cutoff (Δ E = 2.5) equals 90%. Anything scoring less than 90% is completely discarded to protect your walls from bad matches.
Mathematical formulas can sometimes be tricked by complex neutrals. For example, a warm white with a hidden pink undertone might mathematically score a 96% match with a warm white that has a faint green undertone. On a real wall, they will clash.
To protect your design, our engine utilizes strict “Algorithmic Gates.” Before we ever show you a match, the algorithm analyzes the primary and hidden undertones of both paints. If the underlying color families clash, the pairing is heavily penalized and removed from your results, saving you from expensive design mistakes.
